ARTE FIERA OBSERVATORY
Aldo Giannotti (b. Genoa, 1977), a visual artist, has lived and worked in Vienna since 2000.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, at the Wimbledon University of Arts in London, and that the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
He has created and exhibited works in collaboration with many institutions, including: Albertina Museum, Vienna; Kunsthalle Wien; Lentos Museum, Linz; OK-Zentrum, Linz; Kunsthaus Graz; Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna; ar/ge kunst, Bolzano; Künstlerhaus Dortmund; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; Austrian Cultural Forum, London; Donaufestival, Krems; Muzeum Sztuki, Łódź; Museum of contemporary art, Zagreb; MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna.
He has received numerous awards and grants, such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2020), the first prize in the Austrian Graphic Art Competition, Kunsthalle Innsbruck (2019), the Pomilio Blumm Prize, Milan (2015), and the recognition award from Strabag Kunstforum, Vienna (2016).
For Art City 2021, Aldo Giannotti has inaugurated his solo show "Safe and Sound" at MAMbo.
In Bologna...
In Bologna I remember that Stefano Giuriati and I once smashed an Alfa Romeo (belonging to the carabinieri!) against two trash bins.
In Bologna I remember that I once installed some neon lights on a construction crane. They worked like a compass that always pointed north, regardless of how the arm moved.
I remember coming to Bologna for the first time about 25 years ago to see a retrospective of Japanese animation (or maybe it was a show of works by Andrea Pazienza … I can’t remember which).
In Bologna I remember that I once hired two Austrians to light up (with hand-held lights) the monument in Piazza 8 Agosto (which is never lit up at night) to celebrate its liberation from Austria.
In Bologna I remember Cesare Pietroiusti’s exquisite personality. Many of my childhood friends live here, and when I come back I feel at home again.
In Bologna I had my first and last galleries and my very first visit to (if not participation in) an art fair.
Bologna is where I’m now organising my first anthological show.
