HUBERT KOSTNER: ≠ (disuguale)

In questa mostra Hubert Kostner si concentra sulla distinzione e sul potenziale conflitto tra “naturale” e “artificiale”, tra ciò che esiste senza l’intervento dell’uomo e ciò che l’uomo ha creato. Non è la stessa cosa. La mostra personale - la ventunesima dell’artista, e la quinta presso la galleria - è intitolata “≠”, disuguale. Nelle due sale principali Kostner contrappone materiali di tutti i giorni: la “naturale” cera d’api e la plastica “artificiale” di bottiglie per bevande, che nel contesto artistico diventano “quadri di cera” e “sculture plastiche”. Mentre la cera d’api rappresenta la natura nella sua purezza, la plastica è ormai diventata uno dei peggiori nemici dell’ambiente: come imballaggio frena il naturale processo di decomposizione dei materiali organici, e non è di per sé biodegradabile. Entrambi i materiali, la cera come la plastica, sono facilmente plasmabili sotto l’effetto del calore. Qui lo scultore, che di solito opera per intaglio dei materiali grezzi, diviene modellatore, e procede plasmando le sue creazioni, capace di ricavare da entrambe le cose, sia dall’“artificiale” che dal “naturale”, qualità estetiche. Kostner lascia agire il materiale stesso: anche se il processo di formazione viene guidato dall’artista, non è del tutto controllabile. La cera sfiorisce quando indurisce, mentre i colori delle bottiglie da 1,5 litri di uso commerciale, che variano dal verde-arancio al bianco-azzurro, perdono la loro intensità. I lavori esposti sono stati realizzati tutti tra il 2017 e il 2020 e portano coerentemente avanti il concetto di Hubert Kostner di un confronto critico (mai però moraleggiante) con la nostra realtà di vita, seguendo la strategia scultorea della “deformazione”. Hubert Kostner nasce a Bressanone nel 1971. Tra il 1997 e il 2003 studia all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Monaco. Per lunghi periodi vive a Monaco, Madrid e Pechino. Attualmente vive e lavora a Castelrotto (BZ).

HUBERT KOSTNER: ≠ (not equal)

Hubert Kostner’s current exhibition is dedicated to the distinction and the potential for conflict between “natural” and “artificial”, between what simply exists without human involvement and what man has created. These are not the same. He uses the inequality symbol, “≠”, “not the same as”, as the title for his twenty-first solo exhibition, which is his fifth at the Alessandro Casciaro Art Gallery. Here, in two main rooms set up for installations, Hubert Kostner juxtaposes everyday materials: the “natural” beeswax with the “artificial” plastic of drinks bottles. In the context of art these become “wax pictures” and “plastic sculptures”. If beeswax represents nature in its purity, then plastic has become one of the biggest environmental killers, and all the more so because, when used for packaging, it delays the natural decomposition process of organic materials but is not itself degradable. Both wax and plastic are easily moulded when exposed to heat. Here, the sculptor who works by carving his raw materials becomes a plastic artist, shaping his creations, reclaiming the aesthetic qualities from both forms, the “artificial” and the “natural”. Kostner lets the material itself act. Although the process of forming is guided by the artist, it is not entirely controllable. Wax loses its bloom when it hardens, while the colour range of the standard 1.5 litre bottles, from orange-green to blue-white, loses its sharpness. All the works on display were created between 2017 and 2020 and through them Hubert Kostner consistently pursues his concept of a critical but never moralising examination of the reality of our lives with the aid of the sculptural strategy of “deformation”.
Hubert Kostner was born in 1971 in Bressanone (Italy). He graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He lived in Munich, Madrid and Beijing. He currently lives and works in Castelrotto (I).
