Arte Fiera, Italy’s longest running art fair and the leading national event in terms of sales, has been the fulcrum of the national art market for the last 42 years. The coming edition will be taking place from the 2nd to 5th February with a preview on the 1st February.

Exactly 151 leading galleries have been invited to transform pavilions 25 and 26 of BolognaFiere into a platform for art and debate about modern and contemporary art. The number of galleries participating was considered very carefully in order to ensure the high quality of the event, a further 30 exhibitors that operate in publishing, graphics and the creative arts will be participating, bringing the total number of exhibitors to 181.
For the second year running, Angela Vettese will be the artistic director for the event and will be pursuing the curatorial approach that she began with the 2017 edition. For 2018 this will be enhanced with some key appointments offering in-depth insights into the work of individual artists and also some theoretical reflections.
With a focus specifically on the Italian scene and on the substance of the content, Arte Fiera 2018 is set to underline its role as the Italian art fair par excellence. Bologna in this context, continues in its tradition as a learned and cultured city as capable of critical focus as it is of moments of experimentation and one that is not, however, inclined towards the globalized sensationalising of art and its market.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Though maintaining the structure established last year, Arte Fiera 2018 will be offering some significant new developments.
Planned for the 2nd and 3rd of February is the International Convention curated by Angela Vettese with Clarissa Ricci, entitled ‘Between Exhibition and Fair: entre chien et loup’, organised in collaboration with the IUAV University of Venice with the support of the University of Bologna, on the subject of the growing hybridisation of exhibitions and fairs, a hot topic of debate but so far one that has been examined little, perhaps due to the persistent historical, curatorial and theoretical resistance to relate art to the market.
The discussions will be curated by Clarissa Ricci, Cristina Baldacci and Camilla Salvaneschi and will involve the participation of academics, artists, critics, curators, editors and other actors in the art system. The list of high profile speakers attending is set to include Terry Smith, Bruce Altshuler and John Rajchman.
The Main Section of the fair will include the subsection Modernity, the concept of which is to trace the etymology of the term: ‘Modernity’ not as modern art, currently intended as art from the early twentieth century, but as the relevance of the here and now, from the Latin word ‘modo’ that means ‘just now’.
Within some of the stands, therefore, there will be some small personal exhibitions of artists considered worthy of further attention. The aim is to create a pathway between different artists from each epoch, nation and movement, brought together by a fil rouge of particular relevance that distinguishes their work and the courage that gallerists have demonstrated in exhibiting them.

Once again the bond with the city will be further reinforced with the section POLIS, which this year will be enhanced in new ways.
POLIS / ARTWORKS will include installations in unpredictable and evocative spaces in the city, curated by Angela Vettese with the coordination of Nicolas Ballario and in collaboration with some of the galleries taking part in Arte Fiera. On display will be works by:

POLIS / CINEMA, La comunità che viene (The coming community), curated by Mark Nash, is a selection of films held at both the fair and at MAMbo to reflect on the communist and post-communist identity of a large part of Bolognese and Italian culture. Taking Pierpaolo Pasolini as the connecting link with the exhibition that Nash curated last year at the Archaeological Museum, the event develops as an investigation into the image of the past that still has unresolved and unconscious repercussions on the present
POLIS / SPECIAL PROJECTS: PERFORMING THE GALLERY, a performance event at the Collegio Venturoli. This Art City project is coproduced by Arte Fiera and curated by Chiara Vecchiarelli: performances will be spread across the fair and the city, reflecting on the format of the gallery as a device in the activation of the artwork-time.
POLIS / BBQ, curated by Mia D. Suppiej, is a project that connects the works from ‘artist-run spaces’ and ‘no profit spaces’ that have spring up in recent years in Bologna. It offers a short overview of the independent contemporary art scene in the city, with a schedule of exhibitions, performances and openings.
Finally, there will be further events as part of PRINTVILLE, curated by Amedeo Martegani, the innovative section dedicated to the press and to multiple works that, as was the case also last year, welcome visitors to Arte Fiera at the very beginning of the exhibition pathway.
THE SECTIONS
With the exception of the Nueva Vista group, Arte Fiera 2018 will not include boundaries to separate the exhibition into modern and contemporary art. The sections and the genres are mixed together with the aim of creating a pathway of visions and interests in which the works of yesterday and today can dialogue harmoniously, overcoming lines of demarcation that have become unreliable and, conversely, generating a critical evolution.

THE AWARDS
PREMIO EUROMOBIL AWARD
The twelfth edition of the Euromobil Group Under 30 Award is for Italian and foreign artists exhibiting at Arte Fiera. The prize will be awarded by a jury of critics and experts from the sector on 3rd February. The winner will be invited to interact with the collections of the Euromobil Group, the main sponsor of Arte Fiera.
THE #ContemporaryYoung AWARD
The #ContemporaryYoung Award was launched by the Bologna Young Industrialists for the first time at Arte Fiera in 2015. The initiative is open to all artists aged under 40 attending Arte Fiera and whose works can in some way be linked to the idea of making and constructing. The work by the winner will become part of the collection of the Young Entrepreneurs of Confindustria Emilia. The aim is for the Association to create an artistic fund for young artists, which is conceived and intended to grow together with Arte Fiera.
ANGAMC AWARD
The ANGAMC Career Award, which is in its second edition, is an acknowledgement of the history and activities of gallerists affiliated to the ANGAMC that, over the course of their careers, have demonstrated a particular commitment to the role, obtaining results from an artistic, human and commercial point of view. The 2018 winner of the award is Milanese gallerist Giorgio Marconi. The prize will be awarded on 3rd February by Mauro Stefanini, president of ANGAMC, the National Association of Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries. Angela Vettese, Artistic Director of Arte Fiera, Marco Momoli, Exhibition Director of Arte Fiera and Bruno Corà, President of the Burri Foundation will be attending the award ceremony.
ART CITY
From 2nd to 4th February 2018, ART CITY Bologna is set to return. The initiative involves an institutional programme of exhibitions, events and special initiatives promoted by the Bologna city council in collaboration with BolognaFiere for Arte Fiera, with the coordination of the Modern and Contemporary Art area of the Bologna Museums Institution. For its sixth edition, ART CITY Bologna will be redefining its curatorial format with the new art direction of Lorenzo Balbi, proposing a programme divided into ten events, including exhibitions, installations and performances, and a special project that explores the best events in contemporary art with an eye on the contamination between different styles and languages. All of the events selected share some key features: they are monographic projects of solo artists (Italian and foreign) and they have been proposed by a curator and designed specifically for a determinate venue that is not usually accessible to the public. Scheduled for Saturday 3rd February is Art City White Night, which will fill the city with hundreds of initiatives for an all-night art event that is unique in Italy.
