Arcade è lieta di presentare un nuovo nucleo di opere dell’artista britannico John Wallbank. Wallbank (UK, 1976) ha studiato alla Slade School of Art di Londra, dove si è diplomato nel 2004. Nel 2010 è stato insignito del Mark Tanner Award per la scultura, e nel 2013 Black Dog Press ha pubblicato un libro commemorativo del premio, dal titolo Thinking is Making. Fra le mostre recenti:Odds, TOMA Projects, Southend (UK), 2019; Open Studio Rein Dufait, in dialogo con Hans Demeulenaere e Maria Zahle, Ostenda (BE), 2018; Arcade, Londra (UK), 2017; Frieze Sculpture, Regents Park Londra (UK), 2017; Artist Boss, New Art Centre, Roche Court, Salisbury (UK), 2017, una mostra dedicata agli assistenti di studio di Sir Anthony Caro (Wallbank è stato assistente di Caro dal 2005 al 2013) e alla questione dell’eredità artistica nella scultura inglese.

 Arcade è lieta di ospitare la prima mostra personale nel Regno Unito di Marijke De Roover, nella quale l’artista presenterà una versione ridotta all’essenziale e “unplugged” della sua recente creazione operistica Live, Laugh, Limerence, commissionata dalla David Roberts Art Foundation ed eseguita per la prima volta nell’ottobre 2019, nel corso della serata di performance Ministry of Sound. Con questa performance operistica, De Roover riflette sul modo in cui coreografiamo culturalmente e organizziamo la performance amorosa secondo strutture etero-normative; i cliché delle commedie romantiche, del teatro musicale, dell’opera, del karaoke, di Disney. La mostra include opere della serie recente dei “memes” accanto alla versione video di Live, Laugh, Limerence.
Marijke De Roover (BE, 1990) si è diplomata (2011) e ha conseguito un Master of Arts (2013) presso KASK, Gent (BE); in seguito ha svolto una residenza presso HISK, l’Istituto Superiore di Belle Arti di Gent, che si è conclusa nel 2018. Ha inaugurato di recente la sua prima mostra personale in un’istituzione pubblica, che include una serie di creazioni performative, presso il museo De Pont di Tilburg (NL), in corso fino al 3 maggio 2020. Parteciperà a Hot with Excess: A Season of Contemporary Artists’ Opera presso la Zabludowicz Collection di Londra, dove presenterà una versione operistica completa di Live, Laugh, Limerence. Per l’occasione, un’orchestra “pop-up” ha realizzato arrangiamenti su misura per le parti musicali. L’orchestra è formata da alcuni musicisti della filarmonica De Jonge Scheuten di Wuustwezel, la città natale di De Roover, presso Anversa.

Arcade is pleased to present a new body of work by British artist John Wallbank. John Wallbank (UK, 1976) graduated from the Slade School of Art, London in 2004. In 2010 Wallbank was awarded the Mark Tanner Award for sculpture, a publication celebrating the award ‘Thinking is Making’ was published by Black Dog Press in 2013. Recent exhibitions include Odds, TOMA Pro-jects, Southend, UK (2019); Open Studio Rein Dufait in dialogue with Hans Demeulenaere and Maria Zahle, Oostende, BE (2018); Arcade, London, UK (2017); Frieze Sculpture, Regents Park London, UK (2017); Artist Boss, New Art Centre, Roche Court, Salisbury, UK celebrating Sir An-thony Caro’s studio assistants and issues of legacy in British sculpture (2017); Wallbank worked as studio assistant to Caro from 2005 - 2013. Other projects and exhibitions in Belgium include those at: Art Brussels, Out of the Booth (2016); HUB Architects, Antwerp (2016) and Galerie Tatjana Pieters, Ghent (2012 & 2015). John Wallbank lives and works in London.

Arcade is pleased to present the 1st solo exhibition in the UK where Marijke De Roover will present a stripped down ‘unplugged' version of the recent operatic work Live, Laugh, Limerence commissioned by the David Roberts Art Foundation, which premiered at the Ministry of Sound evening of performances in October 2019. Through her operatic performance Live, Laugh, Limerence, the artist questions the impact of how we culturally choreograph and organise the performance of love through heteronormative structures; the clichés of rom-coms, musical theatre, opera, karaoke and Disney. This exhibition features works from the recent series of ‘memes’ alongside the video version of Live, Laugh, Limerence.

Marijke De Roover (BE, 1990) received her Bachelor (2011) and Master of Arts (2013) at KASK, Ghent, BE before completing her residency at HISK, Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Ghent in 2018. She recently opened her 1st Museum solo exhibition and series of performance works at De Pont, Tilburg, NL (until May 3). Coming up – Hot with Excess: A Season of Contemporary Artists’ Opera at the Zabludowicz Collection, London, UK, featuring a fully realised operatic version of de Roover’s Live, Laugh, Limerence. Especially for this occasion a pop-up orchestra produced customized arrangements for the musical pieces. The orchestra is based on a few musicians (from Kon. Harmonie De Jonge Scheuten) from Marijke’s hometown Wuustwezel near Antwerp (Belgium).
