Ilaria Gianni is an independent curator, art critic, and professor whose field of study is semiotic-narrative structures in the visual arts, with emphasis on forms of research that focus on cracks in belief systems. Her curatorial work attempts to build expositive and explorative scaffolding as forms of redistribution of knowledge. She is co-founder of IUNO, a contemporary art research center, and of the Magic Lantern Film Festival, dedicated to links between visual arts and cinema. After graduating from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, she earned her MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London. She has curated exhibitions and research projects in institutions such as: Palazzo delle Esposizioni, MACRO, MAXXI, Galleria Nazionale, FOROF, Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Villa Medici (Rome); GAMeC (Bergamo); Museo d’arte contemporanea Villa Croce (Genoa); Fondazione del Monte (Bologna); Matadero (Madrid); MOA (Seoul); John Hansard Gallery (Southampton); Micamoca (Berlin); DRAF (London); Kadist (Paris). From 2016 to 2023, she was guest curator at the American Academy in Rome. From 2009 to 2016, she was co-director of the Nomas Foundation. She collaborated with ARCOmadrid (“Opening” section, 2018 and 2019), Artissima (Present Future section, 2019-2021), and from 2015 to 2017 co-founded the Granpalazzo independent art fair. She is adjunct professor at John Cabot University, IED (Rome), RUFA (Rome), and Naba (Milan). Over the years, she has contributed texts to many catalogs and journals.
