Il Ponte was founded in 1965 in San Giovanni Valdarno, by the copperplate engraver Vincenzo Alibrandi. It has occupied its current location in Florence since 1977, and is now run by Andrea Alibrandi. Over the last fifty years, Il Ponte has presented a wide range of artists whose work spans the entire twentieth century. A lively publishing effort was undertaken too, in the form of art books and catalogues. In 2003, the space was totally refurbished, in tune with a desire to move the activities to a predominantly contemporary sphere. Among the artists presented: Vincenzo Agnetti, Rodolfo Aricò, Gianfranco Baruchello, Giuseppe Chiari, Gianni Colombo, Jan Fabre, Bruno Gambone, Marco Gastini, Zoé Gruni, Paolo Icaro, Bernard Joubert, Davide Mosconi, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Louise Nevelson, Alfredo Pirri, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Renato Ranaldi, Mimmo Roselli, Paolo Scheggi, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Mauro Staccioli, Mario Schifano, Joe Tilson, Giulio Turcato.
