Monitor was founded by art historian Paola Capata in fall 2003. Since the project's inception, the gallery has been focused on proposing spaces and contexts to artists that would allow them an experimental approach to exhibitions. During MONITOR's first years of activity, most of its program was turned to international emerging artists, experimenting diverse practices from Sculpture to Installation-based work, with the largest core dedicated to Video and Film. Some of these artists are now institutionally recognized mid-career artists such as Nathaniel Mellors, Laurent Montaron, Alexandre Singh and Guido van der Werve. Since the 2010s, the gallery has broadened its attention to other media, especially Painting In 2014, Paola Capata opened a pop-up space in Downtown Manhattan, NYC, titled MONITOR Studio. This was an hybrid gallery space, where several shows and film screenings were organized, ending its activity as an Artists' Residency project in 2015. After that experience, the gallery opened a branch in Lisbon during 2017, which is meant to have a permanent, curatorial, project-space nature - establishing its position in the Portuguese art community quite rapidy.
