Monitor was founded in Rome by Paola Capata in 2003. From the very beginning of its activity, the gallery has worked to provide artists with spaces and contexts that allow for an experimental approach to exhibitions. During its early years, it focused on emerging international artists, exploring a range of practices from sculpture to installation, with a strong emphasis on video. From 2010 onwards, the gallery expanded its focus to other media, particularly painting, supporting a heterogeneous and transgenerational group of painters. In 2014, Paola Capata opened a pop-up space in New York, MONITOR Studio, which concluded its activity as an artist residency project in 2015. Following that experience, the permanent Lisbon venue opened in 2017. In September 2019, the gallery inaugurated its third space in the Abruzzo village of Pereto.
