In 2020 Arte Fiera presents the second edition of Courtesy Emilia-Romagna, the series of shows involving public and private institutional collections of modern and contemporary art in Emilia-Romagna. The format was the same as last year: a curator is invited to explore the collections and chooses works from them to curate a temporary show in the halls. In this way, the show becomes an opportunity to have a close-up look at the region’s artistic wealth, conceived as a “widespread museum”.
The curator of the 2020 edition of Courtesy Emilia-Romagna was Eva Brioschi, art historian, critic and curator of the Collezione La Gaia of Busca (Cuneo). Brioschi has chosen the title L’opera aperta (The Open Work) for her show, which has set up in Hall 15. She describes it as follows:
“The show is inspired by Umberto Eco’ essay of the same name, in which he treats the subject of indefinability in a work of art, understood as an apparatus that anyone – even the artist himself – can “use” the way he thinks best. Although open works are formally finished by their creator, they are “completed” by the interpreter at the time of their aesthetic use. Thus, every use becomes an interpretation and a performance.
The concept of open art is a metaphor of the impossibility to unequivocally interpret every human creation, in an age in which concepts such as discontinuity, fluidity, indeterminism, entropy, contradiction, and complexity demonstrate our need to adapt (resilience) to the world we live in, accepting it and integrating it in our sensibility. Contemporary art, almost par excellence, needs both critical con- tribution as well as participation. Its ambiguity, multivalence, indeterminacy give rise to infinite inter- pretive possibilities that put the spectator and creator in an active relationship, with unconscious projections and continuous additions.
In this voyage of discovery of collections in Emilia-Romagna – to be taken with eyes and mind wide open – the visitor will encounter 20th century masters such as Giorgio Morandi, Carla Accardi, Gerhard Richter, Gianni Colombo, and Salvo, but also artists who have contributed to the history of art and deserve to be rediscovered, such as Mattia Moreni, Alberto Sughi, and Dino Pedriali; leading contemporary artists such as Fischli & Weiss, and internationally acclaimed young artists such as Yang Fudong and Yuri Ancarani”.
