The Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence is deeply rooted in the early guilds of the city. The Company of St. Luke, established in 1339, was the core foundation from which stemmed the Accademia del Disegno founded in 1563 by Giorgio Vasari under the patronage of Cosimo I de' Medici. In 1784 Pietro Leopoldo I of Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany, renamed it Fine Arts Academy, introducing a modern concept of Accademia. Today, the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence is an institution of higher arts education, firmly grounded in humanistic tradition, and in constant evolution. With nearly two thousand students from around the world, it offers structured courses of three-year and two-year programs (+ Masters and PhD), covering a broad range of subjects related to contemporary creativity. These subjects span from visual arts to design, curation, as well as the most innovative technologies of the present day.
